Riri Williams Returns in Ironheart with New Challenges Ahead
Ryan Coogler has had an especially great year so far. Fresh off the successful debut of his most recent film, Sinners, the director is already back to work on a new project: Marvel’s limited series Ironheart. The studio has just dropped a new trailer for the show in the lead-up to its highly anticipated release in June 2025.
A six-episode addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Ironheart stars Dominique Thorne as Riri Williams (aka Ironheart), a teenage tech genius and protégé of Tony Stark in the comics. The new series will be the last TV show of the MCU’s Phase Five.
Ironheart was first announced in December 2020, with an original release year of 2023. However, after the release of 2021’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Marvel updated its long-term plans and reined in the amount of content it releases per year. Citing issues with market saturation, Marvel pushed the release date of Ironheart back to this summer.
Footage for the series was first shown at the 2024 D23 convention, with an official description stating the show is “a crime show with an Iron Man twist at the center.” If this description holds, Ironheart will present a more grounded and more serious tone than has been established by most of its MCU peers.
Introducing: Riri Williams
Riri Williams was introduced to the MCU in 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Following the death of her idol and Wakandan king T’Challa, Riri invents a vibranium detector while in college at MIT, which lands her in the middle of a war with Namor and his blue-skinned army. Throughout the movie, she forms a friendship with Shuri (likewise interested in science) and builds an armored suit similar to Iron Man’s to assist Wakanda in its defense. After the threat is defeated, Riri has to abandon the suit with the Wakandans and return to MIT.
Set to Bridge Technology and Magic
Ironheart will begin shortly after the events of Wakanda Forever. The official synopsis states, “Set after the events of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Ironheart pits technology against magic when Riri—determined to make her mark on the world—returns to her hometown of Chicago. Her unique take on building iron suits is brilliant, but in pursuit of her ambitions, she finds herself wrapped up with the mysterious yet charming Parker Robbins, aka ‘The Hood’ (Anthony Ramos).”
Rounding out the impressive cast are Lyric Ross as Natalie Washington (Riri’s best friend), Alden Ehrenreich as Joe McGillicuddy, Manny Montana as Cousin John, Matthew Elam as Xavier Washington, and Anji White as Riri’s mother, Ronnie. Shea Coulée is in the series as Slug. Jim Rash also makes a return to the MCU as the dean of MIT, a role he previously played in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War. Sacha Baron Cohen has been confirmed as well, though Marvel has yet to share any details regarding his character.
The newly released trailer sets up the show’s premise quickly. The scene begins with Riri entering a closed pizza restaurant. A poisonous gas begins to fill the elevator she is in, giving her only two minutes to escape. She is in the elevator as a part of an “interview” for a job with The Hood, who is on the intercom, chastising her and warning that she will be asphyxiated if she does not break into a floor-mounted case containing a gas mask. Riri has other plans, however, and quickly formulates her escape plan.
Impressed by her innovative ability to get out of a tight situation, The Hood offers her a job on his team in an unspecified endeavor, which she is more than happy to take, using her skills and make something “iconic.” She is held back briefly by her friends, specifically her best friend Natalie, who is concerned about the Hood’s ethical implications. She may be right to be concerned, as, after making a deal with Riri, The Hood says, “Anyone who has ever accomplished anything iconic in life has had to do some questionable things to get it done.”
Audiences are in for a character-driven series that grapples with what it means to achieve one’s goals at all costs, as well as a hero still trying to come to terms with her position in a superheroic world. Riri is a character who has the potential to do great things, but we will have to see if she will get mired in obligations and the sacrifice it might require.
Marvel has stated that the first three episodes of Ironheart will premiere on Disney+ on June 24, 2025, with one episode premiering every week after that. Season is not confirmed, though it could be in the works if the ratings and reception are good. However, fans can get a first taste of action, drama, and tension from the newly released trailer as well as a behind-the-scenes featurette.
Coogler’s success in combining large-scale action with more grounded and intimate storytelling, along with Thorne’s very promising take on Riri, suggests that Ironheart could be the next big thing for Marvel, bridging the high-tech world of Iron Man with an approachable and more urban crime show and setting the tone for the next phase of MCU series.
