Nine teenagers have been arrested in connection with the June 24 shooting death of 16-year-old Trey Dean Wright of Johnsonville, South Carolina, authorities say started as an argument “over a girl.” Investigators have said the fatal shooting was partially caught on video by one of the suspects, who has left Wright’s family reeling in grief.
Florence County Sheriff’s Office deputies found Wright’s body on First Neck Road on June 24. He had been shot multiple times. The road where Wright was killed is a rural area about 45 miles west of Myrtle Beach, S.C. The following day, authorities arrested 19-year-old Devan Scott Raper of Conway, who they say had argued with the victim before shooting him.
Law enforcement officials have said Raper was not the only one responsible for the shooting, and over the following weeks, they arrested more suspects in connection with the case. Prosecutors have said several teenagers helped lure Wright to where Raper was waiting to ambush him and knew the fact that he was armed and was intending to confront the victim, going as far as to make threats to the 16-year-old before the shooting.
Wright’s mother, Ashley Lindsey, told Fox News Digital that the killing has been hard to bear, and the court proceedings on top of it are exhausting. “All this court hearing and bond court and stuff is driving me crazy,” she said. “I don’t even have time to sit down and think half the time, on top of losing my precious baby.”
One of the accused teenagers was identified as Wright’s girlfriend, 17-year-old Gianna Kistenmacher of Myrtle Beach. The Florence County Sheriff’s Office has said Kistenmacher is one of the suspects responsible for setting up the ambush and has been charged with being an accessory before the fact, as it is believed she knew Raper was armed and that violence was going to occur.
Prosecutors in the case have the ability to charge teens as adults under state law, and officials have confirmed five of the suspects in the case are being prosecuted as adults. “The hand of one being the hand of all is part of South Carolina law as well, so that’s the basis of the charge for each of those individuals,” Major Michael Nunn of the Florence County Sheriff’s Office told WBTW-TV.
Three other teens in the Myrtle Beach area were also charged with murder in addition to Raper. The three other suspects were identified as 18-year-olds Hunter Kendall and Corrine Belviso and 17-year-old Sydney Kearns. Prosecutors have said that their involvement in the crime was significant enough that they were each directly charged with murder in the death.
Sheriff T.J. Joye said the case at its root was a result of a personal feud between two sets of teenagers that escalated, and that a connection to a female was part of the origins of the problem. “They had issues with each other, and it was over a female,” Joye said. “The sad thing is, you’ve got a 16-year-old who lost his life. You’ve got a 19-year-old who is going to be in jail the rest of his life. Over what?”
Raper is facing charges of murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime and is being held without bond. Kendall is also facing a murder charge and has been held without bond. Belviso and Kearns each paid a $20,000 surety bond last week and were released from custody. An attorney for Raper declined to comment on the case and has not been able to speak with his client.
The Florence County Sheriff’s Office has not commented on the specifics of the shooting due to the active status of the investigation. Prosecutors have also not responded to a request for comment on the case.
In the meantime, the situation for Trey Dean Wright’s family is immediate, as his mother has continued to grieve over the loss of her son. On top of that, she has faced the court proceedings, which have dragged on as authorities made the additional arrests. For her, the idea that her son’s girlfriend and a number of his peers would allegedly turn on him is one of the many challenges she has had to come to terms with as she and the community try to wrap their heads around how such a deadly situation could come about.
Teen arguments, peer pressure, and the use of firearms are often part of the conversation after there have been shootings in which teenagers have been involved. For a community in South Carolina, this has been yet another reminder of just how much of a problem it can be when young people let things reach that point.
